The Executive Committee is a Committee of the Board of Xstrata (Schweiz) AG, the main operating subsidiary of Xstrata plc. The Executive Committee obtains its responsibility and authority from the Xstrata (Schweiz) AG Board and is directly accountable to the Xstrata plc Board. Other members of senior management are invited to attend Executive Committee meetings as required. The Executive Committee is responsible for implementing strategy, approval of matters consistent with its delegated levels of authority and overseeing the various businesses which comprise the Group. It meets regularly during the year. No meetings are held in the United Kingdom.

Peter Freyberg
Title and age: Executive Committee member and Chief Executive of Xstrata Coal, aged 51 Appointment: joined Xstrata in 2002 Skills and experience: Peter Freyberg is Xstrata Coal’s Chief Executive with over 30 years experience in the international coal mining industry. His mining career began in 1978 with Anglo American Corporation in South Africa, where he completed his degree in Mining Engineering. Mr Freyberg embarked on his international career in 1991 working with Kaltim Prima Coal in Indonesia; followed by Hamersley Iron in Perth; Copelmi Mineração in Brazil; Carbones del Cerrejón in Colombia; and Xstrata Coal in South Africa. Following his role as Chief Operating Officer, Xstrata Coal South Africa, Mr Freyberg was appointed Director of Operations for Xstrata Coal in 2006 and relocated to the company’s headquarters in Sydney where he oversaw the continued expansion of Xstrata Coal’s global operations. Mr Freyberg was appointed Chief Executive, Xstrata Coal on 1 January 2008. Benny Levene
Title and age: Executive Committee member and Chief Legal Counsel of Xstrata, aged 46 Appointment: joined Xstrata in 1997 Skills and experience: Mr Levene began his career at Werksmans Attorneys in South Africa in 1989, where he became a partner in 1993 specialising in local and international mergers and acquisitions, and equity and debt capital raising. While at Werksmans Attorneys Mr Levene assisted with the initial acquisitions by Xstrata of its Ferroalloys assets, and subsequently joined Xstrata Holding AG in Switzerland as Chief Legal Counsel in 1997. Mr Levene was involved in the structuring of the cross-border merger of Xstrata Holding AG into Xstrata PLC simultaneously with the listing of Xstrata PLC on the London and Swiss Stock Exchanges in March 2002. Peet Nienaber
Title and age: Executive Committee member and Chief Executive of Xstrata Alloys, aged 60 Appointment: joined Xstrata in 1988 Skills and experience: Mr. Nienaber holds both a Bachelor and Honours degree in Engineering. Mr. Nienaber started his career as an Iscor bursary holder at Iscor Steelworks in Newcastle and worked for 14 years in the ferroalloy industry at both Samancor and CMI until in 1988 he became one of the founder members of what is now the Xstrata Group's chrome operations. In 1997, Mr. Nienaber was appointed Chief Executive of Xstrata's South African Alloys operations. External appointments: None
Ian Pearce
Title and age: Executive Committee member and Chief Executive of Xstrata Nickel, aged 53 Appointment: joined Xstrata in 2006 Skills and experience: Mr Pearce has worked for more than 27 years in the metallurgy and mining field. He joined Falconbridge in 2003 where he spearheaded the advancement of major growth initiatives as Senior Vice-President of Projects, before being appointed Chief Operating Officer in 2006. He was appointed Chief Executive of Xstrata Nickel following the acquisition of Falconbridge in August 2006. Previously, Mr Pearce worked on Canadian oil sands projects as well as metallurgical and mining projects for Fluor in Canada, Indonesia, Chile and South Africa. He holds an engineering HND in mineral processing and a BSc from the University of Witwatersrand. External appointments: Mr Pearce sits on the Board of Directors of the Mining Association of Canada and the Nickel Institute, and is on the Advisory Board of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100.
Trevor Reid

Charlie Sartain
Title and age: Executive Committee member and Chief Executive of Xstrata Copper, aged 49 Appointment: joined Xstrata in 2003 Skills and experience: Mr Sartain originally worked with MIM Holdings for more than 20 years, initially in a number of mining engineering and management roles at Mount Isa Mines, then as General Manager of the Ravenswood Gold operations and General Manager of the Ernest Henry Mine, all in Queensland, Australia. In mid-2000 he was appointed General Manager of Minera Alumbrera in Argentina, and then Executive General Manager – Latin America in mid-2002. In July 2003 Mr Sartain was appointed Chief Executive Copper Americas for Xstrata, before being appointed into his current role in January 2004. External appointments: Mr Sartain is a Director and current Chairman of the International Copper Association, the leading organisation for promoting the use of copper worldwide, a Director of the Council on Australian Latin America Relations, a Director of the Sustainable Minerals Institute at the University of Queensland, and a Director of Wesley Research Institute.
Santiago Zaldumbide
Title and age: Executive director and Chief Executive of Xstrata Zinc, aged 68 Appointment: Appointed in February 2002 Committee membership: Executive Committee Skills and experience: Mr. Zaldumbide is currently Executive Chairman of Asturiana de Zinc.
He is a previous Chief Executive Officer and director of Union Explosivos Rio Tinto and of
Petroleos del Norte. In 1990, Petroleos del Norte became part of the Repsol Oil Group
where Mr. Zaldumbide was responsible for establishing the international structure of the
enlarged Repsol Oil Group. In 1994, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the
