Xstrata Nickel news release: New collective agreement ratified at Sudbury operations

February 2, 2007

SUDBURY, ONTARIO - Xstrata Nickel announced today that members of CAW Local 598, representing production and maintenance workers at the company’s Sudbury operations, have ratified a new three-year collective agreement. In a ratification vote, 87% voted in favour of accepting the new collective agreement.

The new agreement expires January 31, 2010, and includes the following highlights:

  • A monetary offer including wage increases of C$0.60 per hour in the first year, C$0.20 per hour in the second year and C$0.20 per hour in the third year;
  • Cost of living allowance increases in all three years;
  • A continuity allowance of C$8,000 per employee;
  • A commitment to increase flexibility within the job posting process at the mining operations;
  • Improvements in the benefits package.

“We believe the new agreement is fair and balances the needs of the company with those of employees. We can now look forward to working together to pursue our business goals in Sudbury,” said Mike Romaniuk, Vice-President of Xstrata Nickel’s Sudbury operations. “The success of these negotiations was the result of dedication and commitment on both sides of the bargaining table, and I congratulate both bargaining teams for their success.”
