Description of Operation
Xstrata Nickel Australasia, based in Perth, Western Australia, is a high-grade nickel sulphide producer. Operations commenced at Cosmos with the development of the deposit in 1999, and it achieved first production of nickel concentrate in April 2000. To date, five high-grade massive nickel sulphide deposits have been discovered within the vicinity of the Cosmos Nickel Operation, namely the Cosmos, Cosmos Deeps, Alec Mairs Complex, Prospero and Tapinos deposits.
Production for the operation to date has been sourced from Cosmos, Cosmos Deeps, Alec Mairs Complex and Tapinos deposits; with future production expected to be sourced from the Prospero deposit.
Processing of ore at Cosmos is carried out using a conventional nickel sulphide flotation plant to upgrade the ore to around 20% nickel in the final concentrate product.
