Description of Operation
The Hinojedo roasting plant is located near the port of Santander in Cantabria. Zinc concentrates are processed by this plant to obtain calcine and liquid SO2. Its main facilities are a flash roaster and equipment to liquefy the sulphur dioxide produced by the roaster.
Brief History of the Operation
Following cessation of mining activity at the Xstrata Group’s former Reocín mine in Cantabria, which closed in 2003, concentrates purchased from third parties are being treated at the Hinojedo facility to produce calcine which is then transported to the San Juan de Nieva and Nordenham electrolytic zinc plants.
