Climate change

Meeting the world’s growing demand for energy is a pressing challenge. As developing nations industrialise, urbanise, and achieve higher standards of living, there will be growing demand for increased energy consumption. As a result, the International Energy Agency (IEA) states that global coal demand is set to increase 17% by 2035.

Our view is that coal will continue to be an important, cost efficient and reliable form of baseload electricity generation globally, but we recognise that its production and use contributes to climate change.

We have set ourselves targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of product. With greenhouse gas emissions at every stage in our production processes, we aim to meet our target by:

  • using the methane released when we mine for coal as a source of energy, as we are doing at three of our mines in Australia
  • being more energy efficient and using more renewable energy in our smelting and processing
  • investing in research to find ways to capture and store the carbon dioxide emitted from coal-fired power stations and to increase the useful energy that comes from burning coal

In the years ahead, we expect to further harness emerging technologies to be more energy efficient and to reduce emissions that contribute to climate change.
