Performance

We measure and report on the volume of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that result from our operations each year. Our sites set individual targets for reducing GHG emissions per tonne of production. GHG emissions are measured as CO2 equivalent tonnes (tCO2e) and are classified as:

  • Scope 1 emissions: direct emissions from sources we own or control
  • Scope 2 emissions: indirect emissions from purchased electricity
  • Scope 3 emissions: indirect emissions from sources we do not own or control

Our main sources of Scope 1 and 2 GHGs are from electricity used, from methane released during our coal mining in some regions and from fugitive methane emissions from our closed coal operations. Our main source of Scope 3 emissions is the coal used by our customers.

Our GHG emissions change as our operations evolve. Examples of such changes include:

  • the amount of methane gas present in our active coal seams
  • the depth and age of our mines
  • our energy efficiency
  • the availability of cost effective, low-carbon sources of energy

In reviewing our emissions data each year, we identify small revisions to our previously reported performance data that can improve our GHG emissions monitoring system.
