Climate change

[Xstrata SD environment]
We recognises the environmental, social and economic threat posed by climate change and the need for co-ordinated, global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Xstrata is responding proactively to the environmental, social and economic challenges posed by climate change. It is one of the principal risks facing our business.

Mining industry activities contribute to climate change through the direct release of greenhouse gases (GHGs), in particular methane and carbon dioxide (CO2), and through the intensive use of energy from fossil fuels. All Xstrata commodity businesses strive to reduce their operations’ greenhouse gas emissions, with each site following our Group Sustainable Development Framework to improve its energy efficiency and where relevant, capture emissions.

Xstrata’s total Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions in 2009 came to 22.4 million tonnes CO2e. These are the result of:

Scope 1 emissions Direct GHG emissions (from sources that are owned or controlled by Xstrata)
  • Fugitive methane released during coal mining from decayed organic matter in rock strata.
This is our primary source of direct GHG emissions accounting for 53.9%
  • Fuel, such as diesel and oil, used on site, accounting for 28.5% of our direct GHG emissions
  • Emissions from the use of reductants, such as anthracite and carbon, in ferrochrome smelting
  • On-site waste disposal
Scope 2 emissions Indirect GHG emissions (from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by Xstrata)
  • Purchased electricity used to run our operations, accounting for 41% of our Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions
Scope 3 emissions Other indirect GHG emissions (from sources not owned or controlled by Xstrata)
  • Combustion of coal and methane produced by Xstrata by our customers, estimated as 227 million tonnes CO2e
  • Transport of materials and consumables to our operations
  • Transport of our products from operations to customers
  • Waste sent to off-site landfill
