key challenges
HIV/AIDS
We estimate that around 20% of our employees in our South African businesses are HIV positive, making this the most significant health issue that Xstrata faces. To tackle this problem in a meaningful and sustainable way, Xstrata has adopted a strategic risk management and intervention approach. This approach addresses the underlying factors which contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS, as well as providing education and medical treatment. Read more on page 24.
Fatality prevention
Whilst we are proud of the substantial improvements in our safety performance in 2004, eliminating fatalities and serious injuries remains our key safety challenge. Our South African operations have developed comprehensive plans for safety improvement in their businesses and announced new senior positions to help transfer best practices from our other high performing operations, particularly in Australia. Read more on page 35.
Biodiversity
Xstrata's Biodiversity and Land Management Standard promotes the development and implementation of scientifically sound technologies and procedures across all its operations to effectively manage and conserve biodiversity. Our initiatives and case studies in this critical area are available on page 48.
Climate change
As the world's largest producer of export thermal coal and a significant producer of coking or metallurgical coal, Xstrata Coal is leading the Group's climate change initiatives and has developed a comprehensive climate change strategy. The majority of the Group's greenhouse gas emissions are from the use of electricity and the release of methane during coal mining. Read more about Xstrata's approach to climate change on page 45.
Mining charter
The goal of the South African Government's Mining Charter is "to create an industry that will proudly reflect its promise of a non-racial South Africa". We have developed and implemented comprehensive guidelines to ensure that we comply with the spirit and intention of the Mining Charter and we have been working closely with our stakeholders to address the eight key Charter categories.
