Our key environmental challenges

Xstrata's key environmental challenges are:

  • climate change and greenhouse gas abatement;
  • biodiversity conservation;
  • resource management, in particular water and energy; and
  • emissions, waste and tailings management.

Our overall environmental objectives are defined within our Health, Safety, Environment and Community Policy. These include our commitment to:

  • limit the environmental impacts of our operations through efficient use of natural resources, the reduction of input materials and waste;
  • contribute to the conservation of biodiversity;
  • plan, design, operate and close operations in a manner that enhances sustainable development; and
  • continually improve our HSEC performance by measuring and reviewing the effectiveness of, and compliance to, our HSEC management systems.

The environmental management systems and performance against HSEC Standards and Policy were independently audited in 2005 through the HSEC Assurance Programme.
